Exploring expressions is one of my favorite parts of the character design process. This is the time when you literally sit face to face with your character and get to know them deeply, not only physically (trying to understand their features from every angle) but also personality-wise (how do they laugh, what subtleties will appear on their face when they're upset, do their mouth tend to twist towards one side rather than the other?...). For Mary I wanted to explore the different intensities of her bitterness and disappointment (as she sadly got so much of those during her life) but also the more extreme dangerous moments on the cliffs, the happiness she gets smelling sea air or talking with one of her closest friends.
I love how designing characters keeps making me more observant and empathetic year by year, no matter how long I've been doing this, like... the more I design, the more I learn about humans and the world around us and that simply fascinates me and makes me immensely happy.
PS: More designs to come soon! :)
