Hi everybody! Here's some illustrations I created for an article about the scientific discoveries of Dr. Lori Alvord, the first Navajo woman surgeon who has integrated her indigenous healing background with modern medicine. The article, written by Dr. Christopher Laursen, is part of a bigger project from the University of Toronto called "The Matilda Project": "an educational initiative strategically crafted to cultivate an environment that acknowledges and celebrates the often overlooked contributions of women scientists marginalized by widespread gender biases."
One of my goals in life as a human and as an artist is trying to raise awareness about the issues that really matter to me and this article in particular hit three of my main ones: feminism, bioethics and the protection of the natural world. So you can imagine how incredibly happy and honored I felt when I was contacted to join their team!
The whole process was curated by the wonderful professor Shehryar Saharan, who gave me full creative freedom and support during the whole process so I couldn't be more thankful to him and the whole team for making this possible!
Please go check their project to read the articles about all these incredible women scientists and learn about their discoveries through history here: https://www.thematildaproject.com/
PS: If you want to see the full behind the scenes, sketches and step by step of these illustrations, I shared them with my patrons here: https://www.patreon.com/esthermoralesart (accessible to all tiers! :)
